Along with local authorities, team members of our partners often play an important role in helping safely capturing and release wild animals which are in risk of conflict with the local residents near central Indian tiger reserves. An apt example from July this year was the safe capture and release of a leopard sighted several times in Bhadravati town.
A sense of fear had gripped residents of Gautam Nagar in Bhadravati town following repeated sightings of a leopard in the area. Concerned citizens promptly informed the Forest Department, which immediately initiated a rescue and capture operation to ensure the safety of both the public and the wild animal.
Under the guidance of Range Forest Officer Mr. Kiran Dhankute, Assistant Officers Mr. Komal Ghuglot and Mr. Sandeep Parwe, along with Mr. Shripad Bakare, representative of the Satpuda Foundation, carefully monitored the leopard’s movement and strategically installed a trap cage in the affected area.
The following day, the Forest Department received information that the leopard had been successfully trapped in the cage. The rescue team immediately reached the site and carried out the operation following all prescribed wildlife rescue protocols. After conducting the necessary health assessment, the leopard was safely released into its natural habitat, ensuring the well-being of the animal and preventing any threat to the local community.
The successful operation brought great relief to the residents of Gautam Nagar, who appreciated the prompt response, professionalism, and coordinated efforts of the Forest Department and the Satpuda Foundation. Citizens expressed their gratitude for the timely action that prevented any harm to people while ensuring the safe rescue and relocation of the leopard.
The Forest Department has appealed to the public to remain calm if wild animals are spotted, avoid gathering crowds or attempting to chase the animal, and immediately inform the Forest Department. Officials emphasized that public cooperation is essential for ensuring both human safety and wildlife conservation.
The operation once again demonstrated the Forest Department’s commitment to wildlife conservation and public safety, highlighting the importance of coordinated efforts between government agencies, conservation organizations, and local communities in effectively managing human-wildlife conflict.
