SLTP Partner Satpuda Foundation responded actively to manage a goat kill incident in Pench Tiger Reserve. Assistance was provided to goat owners in filing for compensation and the forest department was alerted.

About the incident:

A couple of days ago, 2 goats were attacked and killed by a leopard while they were grazing in a field near Shiladevi village in Pench Tiger Reserve.

Response by the Satpuda Foundation team:

Satpuda Foudation team member Bandu Uikey relayed the information to concerned forest guard and visited the village as soon as he got the information about the incident.  He also assisted the goat owner to write an application for compensation claim. A camera trap was setup near the goat kill as per the SOP to identify the leopard individual. Images of the leopard was successfully captured and were sent to the forest department. Furthermore, villagers were urged to take utmost care to avoid any untoward incident and the primary response team from the village has been asked to keep a vigil for the next few days.

Responding rapidly to such situations helps ensure that Human-wildlife conflict is prevented and the likelihood of retaliatory attacks on big cats are reduced.
